José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat

Architect: José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat
Location: Barcelona (Catalonia)

The boom in the construction industry as a result of the economic development of the sixties helped to spread the belief in the high profitability of the profession of architect. The resulting increase of students attracted by this expectation, made the School of Architecture to be small fifteen years after his inauguration.

It was thought then to extend it, and further commited the architect who had contributed more to the revival and maintenance of a level of quality in the Catalan architecture in recent decades, an intelligent decision in the beginning of a new period of local architecture.

The extension, located at the rear of the preexisting building, is on two floors to save the staggering gap between the level of the main hall and the street later.

The curved form of the layout is related, according to the author, with the will of guide the classrooms to the north and overlooking the garden, so that students “can look outside and be distracted at times”.

The central classrooms, facing south, are lighted through courtyards to achieve direct and screened light. The exterior treatment is resolved, as in previous works, with vertical ceramic tile well adapted to the sinuous profile of the walls.
